This disorder is not about how smart a person is. In fact, most people diagnosed with language based learning disorders have average to superior intelligence.

Language-based learning disabilies refer to a spectrum of difficulties related to the understanding and use of spoken and written language. These difficulties manifest in various ways both academically and socially. Some signs and symptoms can include difficulty with:

-expressing ideas clearly, as if the words needed are on the tip of the tongue but won’t come out
-using specific vocabulary (frequent use of unspecific vocabulary such as “thing” and “stuff” to replace words that cannot be remembered)
-learning new vocabulary that is seen or heard
-understanding questions and following directions that are heard and/or read
-understanding and recalling information
